how can companies produce such perfect copies of designer items (purses mostly) AREN’T THERE COPYRIGHTS?

A store recently opened in my town that sells fake designer purses, sunglasses and such..
Some of the fakes were really bad, but a couple of the coach purses were perfect! I’m talking the signature “C” and “Coach” on the outside of the bag. It also had a leather zipper with “coach” and “coach” was also on all of the purse’s buttons and clasps. It even had the leather tag sewn inside the bag with the Coach info.
Also I purchased Tiffany’s jewelery (the store falsely told me it was real and then told me it was fake the next time they tried to sell me some!! grrr!) which was identical to real Tiffany items and even had copyright of Tiffany & Co. engraved on the back!
My question is how do companies get away with producing (and for that matter selling) these kinds of items? Surely Coach has copyrighted their “C” design. Restaurants can’t call themsleves McDonalds and give themselves a golden arch sign…why can these purses be sold?
I can see how they can sell a Coach look alike with the “C” design as a “Q” or a “G” or make Dooney and Bourke purses with interlocking “b”s instead of “D” and “B” but these perfect knockoffs make no sense to me.
Don’t get me wrong, $500 purses are completely ridiculous, I’m not saying I approve of it, I just wonder how fakes are legal.
Oh and in addition..it is illegal for them to sell me jewelery that they claim is real Tiffany when it is not, correct?

thanks for ur answer. that helps. I didnt realize that trademarks were a bit different. I think if i was going to invest so much in launching a luxury purse/clothing line I would take the time to get a copyright though.
and I am working on filing a complaint with the better business bureau about the store falsifying their products

OMG, Ivana you made me laugh. I read the whole response and clicked the pics and LOL my sister is the same age and she would have suggested the same thing. I don’t think that will work for an adult in a professional setting.

Which of the many “purse stores” in Chinatown, NY is the best to find the “real” designer purses?
